At Spa, Fernando Alonso qualified for the final qualifying round, while his Aston Martin teammate retired in the second session…
Fernando Alonso (9th): “I am happy with ninth place in today’s qualifying, which becomes eighth place due to Max Verstappen’s penalty. I think this was our maximum for today.
I didn’t feel comfortable driving in practice and didn’t know what to expect for qualifying, but the car behaved well and in changeable weather I always perform well.
“We will start tomorrow’s race with less knowledge about tyre degradation than usual, so it will be interesting. We still have a lot of new sets of slicks left, I hope we can fight for the points.”
Lance walk (15th): “First of all I want to thank my mechanics for the repairs after the accident in the third practice. Due to the heavy impact we had to replace part of the suspension, the underbody, the drivetrain and the gearbox. They did a great job to get me back on track for the start of qualifying.
“Not an easy day. In qualifying I struggled with grip and balance. It’s hard to really fight without confidence. Tonight we will work on everything in an attempt to improve before the race. It is possible to overtake on this track and I will aim to earn points.”
