Zach O’Sullivan won the shortened Formula 2 sprint at Spa on Saturday. He was joined on the podium by Dennis Hauger and Richard Ferschor.
The start was initially scheduled for 14:15 local time (15:15 Moscow time), but heavy rain forced race management to postpone the start to a later time. The wait lasted more than half an hour, but by the time the rain stopped and the track started to dry out, there was no time left to sprint for Formula 1 qualifying.
As a result, the start was moved to 18:15 local time (19:15 Moscow time). The racers on rain tires went to the starting grid, but almost immediately a message from the management appeared about postponing the start for another 10 minutes – again due to rain.
The race has yet to begin. Pole holder Zach O’Sullivan held the lead comfortably into Turn 1, giving Hauger no chance to attack. In the top five, Zane Maloney overtook Franco Colapinto to move up to fourth.
Kimi Antonelli lost one position to Jack Crawford on the first lap. Oliver Berman had a great start and gained six positions. At the end of the first lap in the chicane he passed Isaac Hadjar with a daring braking manoeuvre and climbed to eighth place.
On the second lap of eighteen, Crawford continued to attack and passed Franco Colapinto for fifth place, while O’Sullivan set the fastest time in an attempt to create a gap.
On the third lap, Colapinto lost two more positions – Antonelli and Berman overtook him in the first sector. At the same time, the virtual safety car mode was activated on the circuit, which was then replaced by a real safety car. The reason was a stop at the José Maria Martí circuit due to technical problems with the car.
While the drivers were driving around behind the safety car, the rain became heavier and red flags appeared on the track on lap seven. Everyone returned to the pit lane, there was still hope for a resumption of the sprint, but the allotted time was approaching inexorably and after seven minutes it was decided not to continue the race.
In fact, the sprint lasted only two and a half laps. With such a distance, the first five riders scored points according to the regulations according to the 5-4-3-2-1 scheme. They were O’Sullivan, Hauger, Ferschor, Maloney and Crawford.
