Following Friday’s results, Mercedes decided to replace the new floorpan with the previous version and performed well in qualifying. After Verstappen was penalized for changing the engine, Lewis will start third and hope to fight for the podium.
Lewis hamilton (4th): “When the rain came I knew there was a chance to be up front – these are my favourite conditions. I think if it had been dry we would have fought much further – for places near the bottom of the top ten.
On a drying track, it all depends on the time, on the moment you enter the track. I think we ended up leaving a bit earlier and then we used the last fresh set, and three guys still had some left. It’s a bit of a shame, but it happens. But I’m grateful to be on top. I think if I had another set, I would be fighting for the front row.
“The Red Bull and McLaren cars are much faster than us here, and with Ferrari we are about the same speed. It is clear that Max will find his way forward. They are the fastest this weekend. The battle for the podium will be very difficult, but I am ready for it.”
George Russell (7th): “We went back to the previous configuration to check everything again. On Friday we assessed the performance of the new surface over a long series of laps, on Sunday we will compare it with the performance of the previous version in the race and see which is faster.
Yesterday was an unfortunate day for us, we want to make sure again that the issue is not an update. I am sure that it is not, as we have not had any issues with new products in the last 12 months. Most of the time they worked.”
