George Russell: A winning double is a great result!

George Russell finished first at Spa, taking his second win of the season and the third of his career. Lewis Hamilton’s second place in the Belgian Grand Prix gave the Mercedes team its 60th victory double in history.

George Russell (1st): “Great result! We certainly did not expect this outcome when we developed our strategy this morning.

The car handled perfectly. We changed a lot after Friday and the tires worked fine too. During the race I kept saying to the team: “I think we can do it with one pit stop.”

Our strategists did a great job. A great performance from Lewis; he controlled the race and if the circumstances had been different I am sure he would have won.

During the race I was extremely focused. I think I need to listen to the radio talk again!

Great team effort. We took a chance but it was only possible because the car was great and we had the speed. A winning double is a great result!”

Lewis hamilton (2nd): “We definitely didn’t expect this result. First of all I want to congratulate George and the team.

Friday was a disaster for us, the car had no speed. We made some changes but it was hard to predict how they would affect the car because we didn’t work on a dry track yesterday because of the rain. The car ran fantastic today and that’s a credit to everyone in the team. Great work from the pit stops, the strategists and everyone at the grassroots.

I tried to close the gap to George, but he took good care of the tyres over the long distance. At the end of each segment I felt the tyres could go for a few more laps, but the team called me to the pits. It’s a shame, but sometimes there are days like this.

I don’t think we’re in the title fight. That would be too high of an expectation. If we keep showing the same speed as in the last few races, it will be fantastic. If we can start the weekend better, hopefully we can continue in the same way.

I think McLaren was very quick today, but we managed to pull away in the first laps. We will keep attacking.”
