Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished fourth and seventh in Spa. Both Ferrari drivers regretted that the car did not have enough speed to fight for higher positions.
Charles Leclerc (4th): “Today we just didn’t have enough speed. We had problems with the Medium tyres – the Hard compound was much better today. The Hard tyres were getting better and better every lap, which was completely unexpected.
We did everything we could. The team optimized the car, which was our main goal for this weekend. We didn’t expect the Mercedes to be fast, while the Red Bull and McLaren were in line with our expectations.
“We need more speed for the next stage in Zandvoort. Right now we just need speed. We worked hard to understand the problems and found many solutions. All we need to do now is increase our speed, because right now the gap to our rivals is too big.”
Carlos Sainz (7th): “We need to analyse the results of the race carefully. George drove a long distance on hard tyres. Maybe we should have done the same and done the race with one pit stop.
The race proved to be difficult. I took a certain risk by deciding to start on hard tyres. The decision worked: I moved up to sixth place and showed good pace in the first stint, but then we started to doubt whether we should stick to one or two pit stops.
It is clear that Mercedes is very competitive on fast circuits like Silverstone and Spa. They finished first and second, which means faster than everyone else.
My congratulations to Mercedes, and we have a lot of work to do to improve the car and not just fight with them. We have to make up two to three tenths of the deficit to Red Bull and McLaren.”
