The Mercedes team has released an official statement regarding the disqualification of George Russell from the Belgian Grand Prix protocol. The statement consists of a short speech by Toto Wolff, who admitted the team’s error in calculating the weight of the car and apologized to George Russell.
“We have to accept the disqualification as a given,” said team boss Toto Wolff. “We clearly made a mistake and have to learn from it. We will analyse what happened and understand where exactly we made the mistake. It’s a shame to miss a winning double and we can only apologise to George, who had a strong race.
Of course, Lewis Hamilton rose to first place after the disqualification. He was the fastest to complete the two-stop race and is a worthy winner.
Despite the suspension, there were many positives this weekend. In today’s race, our car became a reference point for the others, even though the drivers followed different strategies. A few months ago, this was simply unthinkable. We go into the summer break having won three of our last four races.
After the break we will try to come back with renewed strength to continue this positive trajectory.”
