Lewis Hamilton: I feel for George

Lewis Hamilton finished second at Spa, but moved up to first place in the protocol after George Russell’s disqualification, taking the 105th victory of his career. The seven-time world champion expressed his support for his team-mate and was pleased that Mercedes was back fighting among the leaders.

Lewis Hamilton: “Of course I’m disappointed that the team missed out on the winning double. But there were a lot of positives today. The car was running well and our pace was faster than we expected.

Some of our opponents seemed to have the same pace, but once we got ahead, we were able to maintain our position. I used a two-stop strategy and was ahead of those right behind. George implemented a one-stop strategy. In the last laps I got close to him, but couldn’t overtake him because I was in the dirty air.

I sympathise with George and am not happy that I won by disqualification, but the last few races we have returned to fighting for wins.

The level of competition is incredible and we have to keep working to consistently fight for victories. In any case, we are going into the summer break with a positive attitude.”
