Fernando Alonso scored points for Aston Martin at Spa, while his teammate Lance Stroll finished twelfth…
Fernando Alonso (8th after George Russell was disqualified): “I am happy with ninth place and two points after a tight race. We considered several strategic options. We extended the first run to Medium and then to Hard – the car was fast and the tyres were not wearing as fast as expected.
We thought there was a possibility for a safety car, and when it didn’t happen we thought: “Why not extend the race and stick to the one-stop strategy?” That decision paid off and earned us several points.
Now I’m looking forward to a short break and the opportunity to recover. We keep fighting, there is still a lot of work to do to improve our results in the second half of the season.”
Lance walk (11th after George Russell’s disqualification): “During the race it became clear that the tyre degradation was lower than expected, so we opted for a one-stop strategy. A few laps from the end of the race I was running 10th, but by then I had problems with the tyres and I didn’t have enough speed to hold the position. As a team we have a lot to do to catch the top four teams.”
