Oscar Piastri finished third at Spa, reaching the podium for the fourth time this season. The McLaren driver was pleased with the result, but added that there was not enough pace to fight Mercedes for victory.
His teammate Lando Norris finished sixth and admitted he had lost a lot of points in recent races due to his own mistakes.
Oscar Piastri (2nd after George Russell was disqualified): “The lack of traffic made a big difference today. As soon as I got to an empty track in the second segment, I noticeably increased my speed. I built up a big lead in time for the last pit stop, but I had to stay on the track like George!
I am very happy with the result. We had a very good race and I don’t think we could have done better. We were just not fast enough. It took me a few laps to pass Charles Leclerc and my tyres were overheating.
It’s clear that George did the right thing when he decided to ride the Hard kit to the finish. We just didn’t have the pace to pass him. Even Lewis couldn’t do it.
I think our team did a lot of things right by creating more chances, but it wasn’t enough.”
Lando Norris (5th after George Russell was disqualified): “I just underestimated the situation in the first corner. I didn’t want to get knocked out in the first corner, so I took the corner a bit wider, but I misjudged the situation at the exit and ended up outside the track.
Today it was impossible to overtake. I think there were only a few overtakes directly on track during the race, and most of them were due to pit stops. I think our car was fast, but I couldn’t get the most out of it.
“I think I need a rest. I lost a lot of points in the last three or four races because of stupid mistakes and bad starts, like today in the first corner. Hopefully I can come back stronger after the break.”
