Horner: Sergio understands that good results are needed

The head of Red Bull Racing is, like Helmut Marko, unhappy with Sergio Perez’s performance in Spa…

Christian Horner: “When we discussed the objectives for the race on Sunday morning, taking into account the front row start and the position of our drivers, we were aiming for third and fifth. In the end we achieved fifth, but not third. We need to look at the data from the race to understand where Sergio lost his pace. We did not expect him to finish eighth from second place.

In the final phase Sergio struggled more than once. He started the season well, but then he started to deteriorate. It is confusing. On Saturday he did great in qualifying, we need to understand what caused his problems in the race.

Yes, we have a meeting on Monday, but it will not only be about Perez; there are also other matters on the agenda, as always before the summer holidays.

At Spa Max extended his lead in the individual championship, but in the constructors’ championship we lost points again and at Zandvoort we want to turn the situation around.

Sergio is a great team player, so we picked him at the end of 2020 and since then he has won six or seven races for us.

Last year, second place in the drivers’ championship and numerous podiums – we had the most successful driver duo in the history of the team. And we are all very angry that Sergio is having problems. The team is fully supporting him. Everyone wants to see him succeed.

I think he understands very well that we need good results from both cars, like at the beginning of the year. That’s what we need to get back to.”
