Oscar Piastri took the podium at Spa and is happy with his performance…
Q: Oscar, you had a great race. Are you satisfied?
Oscar Piastri: Yes, overall I am satisfied. Good race. It could have been done with one pit stop, and now many are wondering why they didn’t.
The car was fast, I had a good race, but a not very successful qualifying prevented me from achieving more.
Q: Your tires were only one lap older than Russell’s. Did you consider doing the race with one pit stop?
Oscar Piastri: I thought about it, but not too seriously. I was surprised how much the disrupted airflow made a difference in this race. When Lewis and Charles made their second pit stop, I went a second faster, just because I was on a clear track. And then the lap time went back again.
Maybe we should have looked more at the strategy of one pitstop, but with two we drove a good race. As I said, everything was decided in qualifying the day before.
Q: You said you had a good race. Do you think this was one of your best Formula 1 races?
Oscar Piastri: I would say yes. It was not easy to get around Charles. If I had not managed to get ahead on that lap, I would probably have been stuck for a long time. This was the key moment of the race.
I rode a high pace and felt really good this weekend. The pace was already excellent on Friday. I was kicking myself a bit because I couldn’t qualify properly, but the race went great.
Q: Oscar, you are clearly improving as the season progresses. How do you feel going into the summer break after perhaps your best Formula 1 race?
Oscar Piastri: Yes, I have performed well in the last few weeks and overall the season is going well so far.
Several weekends were difficult. Japan and China, and Barcelona, but the rest of the races went well. Yes, not everything went as we wanted. Penalties for limiting the track, accidents or mistakes – it was always there, but the last few weekends I managed to get everything in order. I feel like I made a step forward compared to last year.
Last year it would have been difficult for me in a race like Spa, but I improved a lot and the car was very fast. I feel like I’m picking up a good pace, but I know how quickly it can go the other way. But I’m just trying to accelerate and everything seems to work.
