On Monday, Williams announced the signing of Carlos Sainz to a multi-year contract, and reports immediately emerged in the European press that the Spanish driver side was insisting on including an early termination clause in the contract.
There is reportedly a clause in the contract that gives Sainz the right not to drive for Williams next season if he receives an offer to move to Red Bull Racing or Mercedes. The British team’s principal, James Vowles, attempted to refute these rumours.
James Vowles: “Only ten people in the world know what the contract actually says. Only ten. And I guarantee that there is no member of the press on that list. Carlos’ side knows the details of the contract, and so do I. Everything you read on the internet is nothing more than speculation.
The decision to make a statement that the contract is for 2025, 2026 and subsequent years did not come from me, it came from Carlos. He wanted to make it clear to the whole world that he had made a commitment and wanted to be with us.”
