After Carlos Sainz rejected Sauber/Audi’s contract offer, the team has resumed the search for a driver to partner Nico Hulkenberg in 2025.
Italian publication Formu1a.uno reports, citing its sources, that Hinwil is seriously considering the candidacy of Robert Schwartzman. This season, Robert will drive for Ferrari in endurance races and will remain the Scuderia’s reserve driver in Formula 1.
Mattia Binotto, who has just joined Sauber, knows Schwartzman well from his work at Ferrari and has always publicly made only positive comments about the driver, so inviting Robert to the team is very likely.
Another young driver Sauber is eyeing is Gabriel Bortoleto. The Brazilian, who became Formula 3 champion last year, will make his debut in Formula 2 in 2024, has already taken one win and is second in the individual standings. However, Bortoleto is part of McLaren’s youth programme, which could stand in the way of a contract with Sauber.
Interestingly, Sauber already has a Formula 2 driver in its youth program, Zane Maloney, but apparently his application is not being considered.
Other contenders for the Sauber seat remain Valtteri Bottas, Guanyu Zhou and Mick Schumacher. But apparently Mick has already received a rejection.
