Lewis Hamilton admitted after finishing the race at Imola that he wants to quickly forget about this weekend, and it is understandable: the seven-time world champion earned no points and only finished 13th.
The head of the Mercedes team, Toto Wolff, had to apologize to his driver: when he returned to the pits, such a dialogue took place between them on the radio.
“I’m sorry you had to drive such a car today,” Wolff said. – I understand that it is impossible to control it, and to fight for high results, we earn more. The race was terrible, but we’ll leave it with the past and move on.”
“Don’t worry, Toto. We have to keep working hard,” Hamilton replied and Wolff assured him that the team will definitely get out of this difficult situation.
After the race, the head of the Mercedes team commented on the results, praising George Russell, who took a decent 4th place and fended off all of Valtteri Bottas’ attacks in the closing laps.
Toto Wolff: “George performed very well, given the kind of car he had to drive. We didn’t have time to correct the angle of attack of the front wing, which was adjusted for rain and not for racing on a dry track. But he did a great job and had a really great race.
When we talk about Lewis, everything turned out to be unimportant to him. When a driver is in a line of cars and everyone can use DRS, he simply cannot overtake.
George showed what our car is capable of on a free track, but it is clear that for a seven-time champion such a car is not good enough. We just need to correct its shortcomings.
I think as we prepare for the podium in Miami, we can do something. I think we can move forward in understanding the features of W13. We just have to keep studying and upgrading it to eliminate the problem of machine destabilization at high speeds.
