In early 2023, Angela Cullen, Lewis Hamilton’s personal trainer and physiotherapist for seven years, ended her work with the seven-time world champion and retired from motorsport. Nothing was heard from her for over a year, but now Cullen is back racing – working as a personal trainer for fellow IndyCar driver Marcus Armstrong.
“When I first got into motorsport, I went straight into Formula 1,” Cullen told the IndyCar press office. “I worked with Lewis and Mercedes for seven years and during that time I learned a lot. I started to understand not only the sport but also the demands on racers.
When I left Formula 1, I thought I was done with motorsport. I did resign. I took a year off and then we contacted Marcus Armstrong and I started working on his mental preparation. It all happened at a sponsor event with SOS Hydration – they support both me and him – they introduced us.
Marcus asked me one day, ‘Do you want to go to the race?’ And I said yes. IndyCar touched me to the core. It’s so much fun! I just fell in love with these races. The competition is incredible, the drivers are amazing – I was amazed at the skill of everyone in the paddock. That’s how I got into IndyCar and I’m not leaving.”
