Magnussen: We look better in races than in qualifying

Haas F1 decided not to renew Kevin Magnussen’s contract, and next year the American team will completely change its line-up – the experienced Esteban Ocon and the young Ferrari protégé Oliver Berman will compete for it.

It is not yet clear how the Dane’s future career will develop, but summarizing the results of the first half of the championship, Kevin admits that Haas’ results this season have pleasantly surprised him, especially against the background of last year’s difficulties.

Kevin Magnussen: “Before the season we thought our team would be in last place, but that is not the case, so I think it was a pleasant surprise.

Looking back, we understand as always what exactly could have been better, but probably every driver from every team will say the same. Overall, it seems that the first half of the season went well. I hope that this will be the case in the second part of the championship.

The new products that the team introduced during the season worked quite effectively – for the first time in Haas history we introduced new products that made the car faster straight away! The team really took a step forward, so I want to believe that we can continue in the same vein.

Now Haas is on the rise, although we still lack stability, but compared to last year we have improved in this area. Back then we were able to perform well in qualifying, but on Sunday we couldn’t do anything.

I think we managed to change this situation, but we can say that now it is the other way around: it often happens that we look better in races than in qualifying, but on Sunday we perform much more consistently.

“But the competition is so fierce now that you only need to make a small mistake in qualifying and you are far away from your optimal starting position. I think that, especially because of this, our results this year are also not the most stable…”

After 14 stages, Haas is 7th in the Constructors’ Championship with 27 points. But the bulk of it is earned by Magnussen’s team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, and Kevin is a distant 16th in the individual standings, having scored just five points so far.
