Monza is preparing to host the Italian Grand Prix for the 95th time and on Monday the legendary circuit was inspected by Matteo Salvini, the country’s Minister of Infrastructure, accompanied by Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the national automobile club ACI and Monza Mayor Paolo Pilotto.
This year, the circuit underwent very large-scale modernisation works: the classic circuit was extended in some sections, the subsurface was completely replaced over the entire length of the circle, for which five layers of new asphalt were laid, a new tunnel was built under the railway and pedestrian crossings were reconstructed.
“It is impossible to imagine Formula 1 without Monza,” Salvini said. “All the promises have been fulfilled, we see new asphalt laid here and Monza will continue to host the Italian Grand Prix.”
“The job is done perfectly, I say this as an engineer,” Damiani continued. – Now it is a matter of continuing with the reconstruction of the circuit, because next year the contract with Formula 1 expires. We are a year late in replacing the asphalt, so we cannot lose any more time.
“We now have an exceptionally high-quality circuit, and it will remain that way for many years to come. We have also addressed safety issues and now have four pedestrian crossings, one of which is new. The problem has been solved with the funding of this part of the circuit’s modernisation programme, but to complete it, a number of important works need to be carried out, including the construction of new grandstands.”
Italian endurance riders had the chance to drive the first laps on the new circuit and were very pleased with the quality of the asphalt surface.
The Italian Grand Prix will take place this year on September 1.
