Reigning world champion Max Verstappen has been honored with the prestigious Laureus Athlete of the Year award. The Red Bull Racing driver became the fourth Formula 1 driver to receive this award. Before him, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton were recognized as Sportsman of the Year.
“I am very happy, because years of hard work and preparation have preceded this recognition,” said Max Verstappen about the prize. “I am incredibly proud. Since childhood I dreamed of being successful and becoming a world champion.
I am the first driver from the Netherlands to win a Formula 1 title and I will never forget the reaction of the Dutch press and fans. It means a lot to me to receive such a prestigious award and I am very happy.”
Jamaican track and field athlete Elaine Thompson was named Laureus Athlete of the Year. Motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi received the Sports Icon award, British tennis star Emma Raducanou was awarded the Breakthrough of the Year title.
