Two years ago, Lewis Hamilton became an honorary citizen of Brazil – few drivers can boast such recognition. And although there are no representatives of this country in Formula 1 now, in Brazil they can consider Lewis to some extent as ‘one of them’, especially because there are formal reasons for this.
Apparently, the seven-time world champion is growing in popularity there, because he is winning again, and from next year he will drive for Ferrari. But this is not the only reason why Lewis’ portrait is on the cover of the latest issue of the Brazilian edition of Elle Men magazine, and not only because he is perhaps the most important fashionista in the paddock.
“He is the first (and still only) black Formula 1 driver and his voice has become an important weapon in the fight against racism and also in defense of diversity in the sport,” the Brazilian magazine writes. “With his dreadlocks, tattoos and jewelry, Hamilton is not afraid to contrast himself with the uniformity that characterizes his colleagues in the paddock.”
In an interview with Elle Men Brazil, Hamilton admitted, “I don’t always do the right thing, but I think it all comes down to self-expression.”
The photoshoot, the results of which are published by the magazine, took place in Seoul and all the photos are in black and white. We must assume that Lewis liked them, because he shared them on his social media pages and briefly thanked the publication for this publication. And he thanked him in Portuguese: Obrigado!
