Antonelli: I’m not afraid when others judge me

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s contract with Mercedes for 2025 has not yet been confirmed, but it seems that everything is heading in that direction. It is difficult to predict how things will turn out for him, but it is clear that it will not be easy for him, especially at such a young age.

The Italian driver, who is competing in Formula 2 this season, will turn 18 in just two weeks, but Kimi is fully aware of the difficulties that await him if events unfold exactly according to this scenario.

“I think there are always some doubts because everyone is afraid that they can’t do it,” Kimi admits. “But I see this situation as a great opportunity to learn a lot, grow professionally and also have fun.

I am not afraid when people judge me from the outside, I know that Mercedes already has an idea of my potential. The debut season in Formula 2 did not start in the best way, but I am calm because it did not cause negative evaluations. And if I get the chance to take the next step, I will take it with enthusiasm and do my best.

I’ve been under extra pressure lately because of all the rumours about next year, but I’m happy when opportunities arise again.”

Mercedes has put Antonelli through an intensive testing programme this year, having driven Formula 1 cars in previous years, and he has made a good impression on the team, according to chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin.

“During the pre-season testing in Bahrain I was given the test data and it was a special and important moment,” Kimi continued. “I understand that these cars are not forgiving of even the smallest mistakes, but as my confidence grows I am becoming more and more comfortable behind the wheel.

Formula 1 is still my dream, but for now I try to think about it less. It remains to be seen whether this dream will become reality…”
