Leclerc: We didn’t expect to be in this situation

Ferrari are third in the Constructors’ Championship at this stage of the season, but while they have scored 93 points in the last five stages, Mercedes have 142. If such a dynamic continues into the second part of the championship, there is a risk of dropping outside the top three, which they will of course be trying to avoid in Maranello.

According to Charles Leclerc, the team is doing everything to solve the problems that prevent the SF-24 from having speed and to increase its competitiveness. In addition, the efficiency of the chassis was negatively affected by the series of updates that the Scuderia presented in the Spanish phase of the season, because at the beginning of the year the picture was different and the Ferrari drivers achieved one victory each. Carlos Sainz won the Australian Grand Prix and Leclerc was the best on his home circuit in Monaco.

However, from the Barcelona stage onwards the car again suffers from vertical swing at high speeds, and this is apparently due to the new underbody, which Ferrari first tested during the Spanish weekend.

Leclerc has to admit that he did not expect such a noticeable drop in his team’s results, as at the start of the season it was second only to Red Bull Racing, and now it is ahead of McLaren, and Mercedes is also catching up upwards.

“I think at the beginning of the season we didn’t have any special expectations, we were just completely focused on our tasks. But it wouldn’t be true if I said that we expected to be in the situation we are in now,” said Charles. – With these machines, however, it’s generally difficult to predict anything. We didn’t anticipate that we would be in this situation, but it is what it is.

We understand which parts of the machine are experiencing problems and know what needs to be worked on. We are now doing everything we can to turn the situation around.”

Frederic Vasseur, the head of the Italian team, said much the same before the summer break: “Eliminating the swing will immediately make the car more efficient. We are doing everything we can to solve the problem quickly and efficiently.”
