Spaniard Alex Palou has already won two titles in IndyCar and this year, with five rounds to go, he is once again leading the personal standings in the American series. There have been suggestions in the European press that Audi, which is creating a new works team based on Sauber, may be interested in working with the 27-year-old Spaniard, but it does not seem likely that Alex will return to Europe.
In an interview with Madrid newspaper Marca, he responded to the suggestion that Formula 1 needs a driver like him: “It all depends on how you look at it. For example, some people think that Alex Albon’s career is going better than mine. But I would rather have two IndyCar titles than be in Formula 1 and not be able to win any races.
Of course we would all like to get into Formula 1, and at one time I was looking for ways to achieve this, but it is clear that I still would not have won two titles there. Of course I tried to get into F1, but it didn’t work out. Well, that’s okay too. Let’s put it this way: I wasn’t angry.
Even though it didn’t work out, I didn’t lose anything. And I don’t think Formula 1 lost anything. Even without her, I still have an incredible amount of fun every day winning races and championships.”
However, Alex is not certain he can become IndyCar champion again this season, as most of the remaining races will be held on oval circuits, where he has yet to win.
“We knew that the final phase of the season would be difficult, but interesting,” said Palou. – Of the remaining races, only the Portland stage will be held on a road circuit, the rest on ovals. Moreover, two of them are new and we have little information about them.
So it’s hard to predict whether we’ll do well or badly there. There have been weekends this year where we’ve done better than we expected, but there have also been races where we haven’t been successful. But I’m happy to have a good points lead so far, although I wouldn’t overstate the significance of it.
“We’ve done a good job so far, but there’s still a lot of work to do. My goal: to get at least one more win. It’s not really necessary, because even if I finish second in all the races I’ll still be champion, but I still want to keep winning and I think we can do that.”
Alex Palou drives for the Chip Ganassi Racing team and leads the championship with five rounds to go, 49 points ahead of his nearest rival.
