Red Bull Racing celebrates a double win as Max Verstappen won the race at Imola on Sunday and his teammate Sergio Perez finished second, a result that put her 11 points behind Ferrari.
Max Verstappen (1st): “When the weekend goes like this and the team wins the winning double, that’s just unbelievable! Sunday went great, everything was done as it should, although I hadn’t even counted on it before the start of the weekend.
In general, such a weekend can be called ideal, and of course today we have reasons to rejoice. I have earned the maximum possible number of points, the whole team can be proud of it, it will give everyone new strength.
Today it was important to correctly assess the track conditions, make the right decisions and maintain concentration – I think we succeeded in this. We know we have to do the same thing again next race and keep moving forward, so we can’t relax.”
Sergio Perez (2nd): “The race was tough, but fun. Rule number one in such circumstances is that you have to make it to the finish. It’s not easy because it’s easy to make a mistake, but we managed to avoid problems and have a clean race.
I had a great start, I also acted correctly on the restart and I think the team has developed excellent tactics. When I was on the intermediate tire I tried to save the tires but it started to degrade intensively and Charles Leclerc was driving very fast at the end of this segment, so I was happy to stay ahead of him.
The rivalry with Charles was very sharp, he always kept his distance which allowed him to apply the tactics of a previous pit stop. When we decided we had the situation under control, he changed the tires and our job got more complicated.
We both attacked on under-warmed tires – it must be admitted that it is easy to make a mistake in such a situation, and Charles couldn’t avoid it.
The start of the season was very difficult for us due to reliability issues and retirements, so it’s very important that we got an excellent result today.”
Christian Hornerteam leader: “This is one of our best results, the team has almost earned the maximum possible number of points this weekend, which is unbelievable.
Max and Sergio drove great and took our first winning double since the 2016 Malaysian race. I am very proud of all our team, everyone who has worked on the track and base in Milton Keynes and delivered this great result.
To rehabilitate after Australia, we needed just that. The season is long and this result will give everyone confidence. We will try to develop it in Miami in two weeks.”
