Ricciardo used Villeneuve’s criticism as motivation

During the season, Jacques Villeneuve criticised Daniel Ricciardo, and in Canada he asked a tough question live on Sky Sport F1: “Why is he still in Formula 1?” The Australian was hurt by this criticism and has now admitted that he used it as motivation.

Daniel Ricciardo: “In Montreal, Jacques said some unpleasant words that hurt me. I said to myself: ‘OK, if you want to test me, go ahead.’ In the end, this criticism helped me.

I usually don’t read something like this, but the team lets me know so I can be prepared if the press has questions.

These words really touched me. He is a world champion and knows our sport well. I could say to one of the riders that “he is going through difficult times”, but I would never say bad things about someone, because I know how difficult it really can be.

I was upset, but I thought, “If some people feel this way, it’s time to remind them that I’m still here.” I used criticism to my advantage. Every person has their own opinion. I said to myself, “Don’t worry. Use it as motivation.”
