FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has demanded tough action from Formula 1 stewards in response to negative comments that provoked abuse of officials on social networks.
A recent study has found a link between negative comments and an increase in online abuse. The latest meeting of the World Motor Sport Council adopted a definition of ‘misconduct’ that will form the basis for stewards’ decisions.
Statement by the FIA President
Research conducted as part of our ongoing fight against online abuse has shown a direct correlation between negative comments from riders and team members and an increase in abuse of officials on social media.
The latest meeting of the World Motor Sport Council updated the definition of misconduct following incidents in which prominent members of our sport made statements to officials that incited abuse.
This will provide additional support to FIA officials and volunteers who dedicate their time to improving our sport and keeping it safe and fair.
Stewards must be prepared to show determination in the fight against this form of violence. They can count on my full support in taking decisions. I urge them to show that the FIA will not tolerate any abuse in our sport.”
