For years, Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri served as the final stage of the development programme for young drivers and a testing ground for Red Bull, but new management came in, another rebranding took place and things changed.
Team principal Laurent Mekies spoke to RacingNews365 about RB’s objectives in an interview.
Laurent Mekies: “The great thing about this project is that we have a lot of freedom, which we decided to take advantage of. We try a lot, some work and some don’t. We change a lot by constantly challenging ourselves. We try to get the team to the right level, and as quickly as possible.
Sometimes we make mistakes, sometimes we take a step back, but it is definitely a responsive, simple and streamlined environment with an incredible team spirit. It is important to make sure that we do not lose focus on the medium term, because the pressure to deliver results quickly will always be there.
Difficulties cannot be avoided, but it is precisely at such moments that you must remain true to yourself and your values. We do not press the SOS button at the first difficulties and strive to solve our problems ourselves. You do not create a corporate culture in one day; we work towards this with our experienced employees.
We are convinced that this will allow us to achieve the best lap time, because it does not depend on the head of the aerodynamics department, nor on the technical director, nor on the team leader. Lap times are the result of the work of six hundred specialists, and that is why we invest so much in our employees.”
