2024 versus 2023: average final position

Comparing intermediate results from two different seasons in Formula 1 is always difficult. Races take place under different conditions. There are different numbers of stages, sometimes even different scoring systems, but over a long distance these factors do not seem to be so critical, and the trend is clear.

Last year there were twelve Grand Prix before the summer break, this year there are fourteen. We compared the situation in these seasons before the resumption of the competition after the summer break, comparing the average position at the finish.

Previously, many changes in the standings were explained by driver transfers, but in 2024 the teams retained their line-ups, so the rating results accurately characterize the form of the team and the driver.

McLaren drivers have made the biggest progress compared to last season, with Oscar Piastri finishing 6.1 positions higher on average, and Lando Norris – 5.4. Third in the ranking is Nico Hulkenberg.

Last year’s ranking leader was in last place – Fernando Alonso finished each race an average of 5.4 positions lower than in 2023 – and lower than in 2022 (8.7).
