Last August, Lewis Hamilton spent two weeks in Africa, and the trip made such a strong impression that he decided to repeat the experience, but to countries in a different part of the continent.
This year his route started in Morocco, and now Lewis has visited Senegal, and here are his comments left on social networks.
Lewis Hamilton: “This is the second year I’ve been lucky: I’m travelling to Africa during the summer holidays. When I first went here I was just amazed at how beautiful this world could be. It has a healing effect too, and this trip was the same. I feel at peace just like then.
First stop was in Morocco and my impressions are beyond words and there is still much to see. Next stop is Senegal.
This is the most incredible part of the route: I visited the island of Gorée (Île de Gorée is a UNESCO World Heritage Site), which for centuries was the largest centre of the slave trade off the coast of Africa.
There you experience a very heavy feeling. It is impossible to even imagine the horror that people experienced, being torn from their homeland for centuries and sold into slavery. I really felt the burden of all this. It is very important to study history and remember our ancestors…
Thank you Senegal! Everyone I met there were great people and I definitely have to go back. I highly recommend a visit there.”
