During the championship’s summer break, Fernando Alonso visited his birthplace of Oviedo and, accompanied by representatives of the local authorities, toured its museum and karting track.
Fernando was with his father, José Luis Alonso, but they were also accompanied by Adrian Barbon, head of the province of Asturias, and Vanesa Gutiérrez of the Cultural Council. According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, this visit had a special purpose: work is already underway on the expansion of the museum complex, which will include a go-kart track, but which is already under the roof.
The new building is also expected to house the offices of the Automobile Federation of Asturias. Construction is already underway, but is still in its early stages and is expected to be completed in November. When the building is completed, it will be the first indoor karting track in Asturias – the number of such sports facilities in the north of Spain is very small.
“I want to thank Fernando and his father for the work they do,” said Adrian Barbon after a tour of the Alonso Museum. “It is important to stress that we will not always have athletes of Fernando’s calibre, but through his example he inspires many young Asturians.”
