Lewis Hamilton turns 40 next year and is embarking on a new phase in his career at Ferrari. The seven-time world champion said he is already thinking about retirement and plans for the future, but that he wants to give the best of himself in the near future.
Lewis Hamilton: “There are days when I think, ‘I don’t even know how long I can go on.’ There are days when I think, ‘I need a break.’ We don’t have long breaks during the season like in other sports, so I simply don’t have any free time. In my mind, I had a plan for how long I wanted to go on [выступать в гонках]. Now all I need to do is develop a strategy and a series of steps.
Do I find myself not trying my best and not loving my job anymore? I hope that moment never comes and that I never fall in love with racing. However, I will know when it is time to stop. I want to make sure that I really give it my all while I can and enjoy the sport that I have played my whole life.
Many retired early, and many of them admitted in conversations with me that they would like to spend another year or two in racing. And they said to me, “Stay as long as you can!” But I don’t want to perform if I’m not good enough.”
