Adrian Newey: I’m just trying to live my life

Adrian Newey has made it clear that he is not susceptible to rumors about the next phase of his career, which is set to begin in 2025. However, as the famous racing car designer stressed, he will remain in contact with Red Bull even after the formal separation from that company, as he plans to complete work on the RB17 hypercar.

Even before the official announcement that his nearly two-decade partnership with Red Bull would end in early 2025, there was a lot of talk about other Formula 1 teams being interested in his services – mostly Ferrari and Aston Martin. But according to Newey, he learned long ago not to pay attention to what they say and write about him.

“It’s easy because I don’t read what they write on social media and I don’t read the press very much – I stopped doing that a long time ago,” Newey said while speaking on the Talking Bull podcast. “Because when I was working with the small Leyton House team and developing the first car in 1988, it worked out quite well.

But then, in 1989, we got it all wrong and I went from being the new hero of the Formula 1 paddock to being an idiot who could only surprise once. And then I thought that you can’t read the press when it writes well about you, and then get angry when it writes badly. And I told myself that I wouldn’t read anything at all.

But my wife keeps an eye on social media and she generally keeps me updated on what’s going on, but I’m relatively immune to it. I just try to live my life in such a way that it doesn’t affect me in any way.

It was a very difficult decision for me (to end my relationship with Red Bull), but I had to do it for a number of reasons. The positive thing is, and this is the most important thing, that I needed a kind of break, and now everything is going in that direction. But it also means that I can fully concentrate on working with the RB17 until the first quarter of next year.

When my relationship with Red Bull officially ends, I will continue to work on the hypercar project remotely, but when the bench tests start and then on the track, I will also be involved. Because I have put too much effort into this car and have worked on the RB17 project mainly after work, in the evenings or at the weekends, and I cannot leave the project at this stage.
