James Vowles: It’s important to find time to exercise

Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, James Vowles spoke about the importance of staying fit as it directly relates to how effectively he handles his duties as Williams team manager.

James Vowles: “I try to cycle to work at least once a week. From my house to Williams base it’s 33km, it turns out I travel 66km a day.

After all, if you are not in the best physical condition, fatigue will quickly overcome you – that’s why you need to train so that your tone is always at the right level.

I lead a team of a thousand people and I hope my role is to be an example to everyone and I believe that good physical condition plays a key role in this.

I am a very goal-oriented and ambitious person. Anyone who communicates with me feels it immediately. And to always achieve your goals, you need balance in everything. That is why it is so important to find time for training to not only maintain your physical condition, but also to try to constantly improve it.

My career in motorsport began almost 25 years ago and I dedicate all my time to my work – from the moment I wake up in the morning. I want to make Williams a team that I can always look back on with pride at the time I worked with them…

When the starting lights go out during a race, everything fades into the background, you are not allowed to be distracted by anything – not even during the warm-up lap. There is nothing else for you – there is only your job.

In my opinion, this is also part of the passion that unites all those involved in Formula 1, and it becomes a kind of addiction. But this is precisely one of the most loved aspects of our sport.

The great thing about Formula 1 is that you have a reality check every two weeks – you can see directly what level you are at based on the team’s results. And if you don’t earn points, it’s always painful and disappointing.

But for me these are normal experiences, because I believe in our team, that we will reach our goal one day. Our program is not designed for one year, not for two or even three years; we have plans for more than five years; and to fulfill them, you have to do everything right. That’s why I set the highest standards for myself every day.

I have to have confidence in every decision we make, in every action we take. So that I can look my colleagues in the eye and know: I did everything in my power…’
