Tsunoda: I didn’t expect us to be so fast

Yuki Tsunoda finished seventh in Imola, the best result of the season for an AlphaTauri rider. His teammate Pierre Gasly held out Lewis Hamilton for most of the race and finished twelfth.

Yuki Tsunoda (7th): “I am very happy with the race and the fact that I scored points on the home track. There were a lot of our staff from the base in the stands – on every lap I saw the AlphaTauri flags, which gave me acceleration. A huge thank you to everyone on the team for the hard work.

Today the car had a very good pace – before the weekend I did not expect that we would be so fast, but the team has made progress and I am happy with today’s result.

Pierre Gasly (12th): “A disappointing race. I was stuck in a group of cars where everyone could use DRS and given our top speed I couldn’t do anything.

For this weekend the car had a high speed in qualifying, but unfortunately we were behind in Imola on Friday. We need to analyze everything and understand how to get better results in qualifying for the next race.

I’m looking forward to the Miami round – the track looks interesting so I’d rather race it.”

Franz Toast, Team Principal: “Today we saw an exciting race. Congratulations Red Bull Racing on a well deserved double win. Max and Sergio controlled the pace throughout the race – a fantastic achievement.

Our race was also a success. Yuki started twelfth, but was tenth after the first lap. He drove a strong race, overtaking many cars and finished seventh. Yuki has been showing a competitive pace since Friday, so I think he has a good foundation for further progress in the coming races.

Pierre had problems all weekend, in the race he was able to overtake his rivals and finished twelfth. You have to analyze everything to understand how to add something to Miami. I believe this weekend’s novelties have worked well, and now the car needs to be refined so that both drivers consistently earn points.

Many AlphaTauri employees watched our home race in the stands. It’s great that they got to see Yuuki’s performance. I would like to thank all our employees in Faenza and Bicester who contributed to today’s success.”
