Hamilton: Bono is a very important asset for Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton has his final ten races left with Mercedes, but these will also be the last of his long and highly successful partnership with Peter “Bono” Bonnington, his race engineer.

There had been several rumours that the seven-time world champion would try to convince one of the specialists he used to work with to move to Ferrari, but yesterday it was revealed that Bonnington will not only remain at Mercedes, but also in the role of chief race engineer.

“I remember five or seven years ago we joked that it would be great to go to Ferrari together one day, but we never really talked about it seriously,” Lewis said. “I’m genuinely happy for Bono. Ultimately, I want him to do what suits him best.

After all, this is his life, so he has to make decisions that are best for him and his family. But nothing will change in our relationship with him. Although we will both be sad that we can no longer work together. It is sad, but we will always cherish the memories of what united us.

Bono is like a brother to me and I am very happy that the team trusts him and gives him the opportunity to grow professionally, because he is a very important asset for Mercedes.”

Naturally, Hamilton was not only asked about this in the Zandvoort paddock, but also about his recent victories at Silverstone and Spa.

“I am feeling more and more comfortable behind the wheel of our car as the year progresses, although I have certainly had problems,” he confirmed. – I recently read someone’s comments that if the car is not working properly, I probably don’t give 100%. I can say that I have worked hard all year to improve, but even that was not enough.

“However, the W15 is gradually becoming more effective and now it can finally show results, which I am very happy about. It will be incredibly great if we can overtake Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. If I can get closer to the top three in the individual competition, it will also be a good result of the season after all the difficulties.”
