Many were surprised when Carlos Sainz signed for Williams. On Thursday in Zandvoort the Spaniard spoke about the reasons…
Carlos Sainz: “First of all, I wanted to make a decision before the summer break. Because I didn’t have a contract with Ferrari in the winter, I went through seven very difficult months. I had to achieve high results at Ferrari, under high pressure, and at the same time work on my future. It wasn’t easy to deal with that, so I wanted to make the decision during the break, confident that it was the right one.
I have always respected Williams, we communicated well. They are committed to Formula 1, they have serious plans and strong leadership, they want to bring the historic team back to the forefront. This is what motivates me. This motivated me when I moved to McLaren, then to Ferrari, and it motivated me to move to Williams. These are going to be interesting years in my career.
“I spent ten years in Formula 1, of which I only fought for victories for two or three years. For me, Formula 1 is not about fighting for victories, but about getting the most out of the car. The result depends on the combination of car and driver, and this is what I want to help Williams with. I am very interested in working on a project to bring a historic team back to the right position, with a strategic plan and the necessary investments. I understand that we should not expect victories in 2025, but I hope for good progress.”
