During the summer break, teams are not allowed to carry out aerodynamic research, but Ferrari used this period to upgrade the wind tunnel.
In Maranello they have improved it by replacing the metal floor with one made of innovative materials. The treadmill has been improved, among other things, so that the wheels of car models blown into a wind tunnel turn at speeds that exactly match the speed of the air flow passing through them.
This solves the problems that Ferrari previously encountered: on the previous track, the rubber was too worn. For aerodynamic studies, teams are only allocated ten sets of special Pirelli tyres, and now Maranello can extract more information from each set of such tyres.
According to GPBlog, the changes will allow Ferrari to experiment more with the car’s ground clearance – in the case of the previous treadmill design, the range of possible adjustments was smaller. Attempts to reduce this could lead to damage to the treadmill on the control bar attached to the bottom of the machine, but now this problem will no longer exist.
