During the first practice session at Zandvoort, which took place under changing weather conditions, Alex Albon posted the 6th fastest time, and after the end of the session, Williams team principal James Vowles commented on the results in an interview with Sky Sports.
“Last year we worked on this track with confidence. Some of the characteristics definitely suit our car, and it shows,” he said. “These kinds of weather conditions are more suited to kitesurfing than to driving a Formula 1 car, but it was nice to see our FW46 handle it well.
“When the wind is strong and gusty, it’s important that the car behaves predictably, and Alex seemed happy. If we talk about Logan Sargent, he was struggling with traffic, so in his case it’s not too bad. Both our cars should be in contention for points this weekend.”
One of the major news items that emerged after the Spa race was the confirmation of Carlos Sainz’s contract with Williams, and of course Vowles addressed the topic: “From the beginning I told him everything as it is, about all our problems, about how we plan to upgrade the car.
For nine months, while we were negotiating, it was still impossible to hide anything. He accepted everything I told him and believed that we would have an interesting journey together. But it will be difficult – first of all, difficulties await us in 2025, but in 2026 everything will become much more interesting. This sincerity has contributed to the strengthening of our relations.
“Carlos is a driver who knows what success is and how to achieve it. Not all drivers can do it, but he can. He will help us ensure that everyone at Williams strives to reach the higher level that is needed to be successful in the World Championship. He will be able to achieve this in a number of areas.”
With Sainz taking Sargent’s place, Vowles added: “Logan was aware of my decision long before it was announced to the world, but for now he will remain at Williams and I have a responsibility to him to ensure he remains a professional racing driver.”
He remains in the top 20 of our sport and we are working together to find an opportunity for him to continue his career. We will try to ensure that this continues beyond this period.”
