“Lando has absolutely everything a champion needs,” said the McLaren team boss. “He is already performing at a level that has distinguished some great champions in the past. And I say that Lando is capable of winning more than one world championship.
When we talk about this year’s championship, we are of course not giving up. Statistically, our gap in the individual championship is quite big and we are trying to catch up with Max Verstappen, although he is not going to make it easy for us, there is no doubt about that.
But we are happy to be in this position, and Lando is not in this position because someone helped him, but because he is performing well. Together with our whole team, he is on his way to his goal. And I would compare his progress with the step that Michael Schumacher made between the 2003 and 2004 seasons, that is, between his sixth and seventh titles.
After 2003 he said: “I am not happy with the way I performed this season and I have to improve.” And the results he achieved in 2004 were simply brilliant. This is the mental attitude that is typical of champions. They constantly strive to improve and take every opportunity to do so.”
