Charles Leclerc: I was greedy and paid for it

Ferrari had high hopes for the home lap in Imola, but the result of the race upset the drivers and fans of the team. Charles Leclerc claimed third, but his own curb error and the ensuing turnaround saw him fall back to finish only sixth.

For his teammate Carlos Sainz, the race ended on the first lap after Daniel Ricciardo collided with him. In the second race in a row, the Spaniard did not make it to the finish. Ferrari’s lead over Red Bull Racing was reduced to 11 points in the Constructors’ Championship.

Charles Leclerc (6th): “I didn’t want a result like that, that’s a shame. Everything that happened after the reversal is already a detail. Yes, this happens sometimes, but I’m sure I shouldn’t have allowed a reversal today.

Third place was the maximum for me – because of the speed of the car I couldn’t count on more, but I was greedy, I wanted more and paid for it. I lost seven potential points. Sorry, but this shouldn’t happen again. My apologies to the team and the fans.

It’s hard to say, thanks to which Red Bull was able to add this weekend. Time will tell how much progress they have made, but there is no doubt that they were more competitive in Imola than in the first three races.

We had an advantage in Bahrain and in Australia, they were faster this weekend and in Jeddah. The battle is very tight and I think it will stay that way until the end of the season. Therefore, small mistakes have big consequences. Today I lost seven points, but next time the losses could be bigger, so you have to be careful.”

Carlos Sainz (retirement): “Charles and I didn’t get off to a great start and we need to figure out exactly what went wrong. I cleared the second corner and left enough room for Daniel, who drove up the curb. I think he Lost control of the front of the car and ran into me No luck – I got stuck in the gravel and the race ended I don’t think I could have done anything else.

The result is very bad. It’s hard for me because I wanted to do well for our fans, but I dropped out with 63 laps to go. It’s bad, but in an athlete’s career there are always such days. Now it’s my turn to go through with it. However, I will continue to do my best and I am sure my time will come.”
