Pirelli racing division chief Mario Isola commented on the results of Friday’s practice sessions at Zandvoort, assessing the effectiveness of three slick compositions at the Dutch circuit.
Mario Isola: “The weather conditions disrupted the first day of the race weekend, meaning the teams were unable to gather too much information in the first practice session, but more information was gathered in the second practice session.
At first glance, all slicks seem suitable for racing use. Considering the weather conditions and track temperature in the second session, the C1 set-up was very competitive and stable. In terms of efficiency, the C2 set-up is not far behind, but that was to be expected after working on the simulator before the start of the weekend.
In terms of speed, the difference between Soft and Medium is eight to nine tenths, and the difference between Medium and Hard is four tenths. The biggest degradation was in the C3 compound, but not so bad that these tires were ruled out for use in Sunday’s race, as there were no signs of granulation. It will be interesting to see how the grip level on the track changes over the next two days.
Rain and wind are expected on Saturday morning, which should change the track conditions somewhat. However, the forecast for qualifying and the race is the same as for the second practice, only the asphalt temperature could be a few degrees higher.”
