Russell: It was the strongest wind of my career

On Friday the Mercedes drivers were fast in Zandvoort – in the second session George Russell led the protocol…

George Russel: “I’m happy to get back behind the wheel and to get a good result in Zandvoort right away. Today was difficult because of the wind. This is probably the strongest wind in the few years that I’ve been racing in Formula 1. However, the car is fine and the new underbody, which we tested in Spa, works effectively here too.

The battle in the leading group will be fierce again, but tomorrow everything can be different if the weather changes again. I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel tomorrow and seeing what we can do.”

Lewis Hamilton (3rd): “Not a bad start to the weekend. Everything went well, we finished in first place. Now we understand the car well, which makes the start of the weekend much easier: we can make small adjustments instead of big changes. Today it was the same – we were well prepared for the rest of the weekend.

I didn’t get the maximum out of a fast lap with Soft tyres, but the result makes me optimistic for qualifying. In the evening we will study the telemetry from long series and think about how we can achieve more.”
