Charles Leclerc: Our gap is still too big

The start of the Ferrari race weekend in Zandvoort was accompanied by difficulties: Charles Leclerc only showed a 9th place at the end of the Friday practice sessions and Carlos Sainz only managed to drive seven laps in the second session, after which the gearbox in his car failed.

Tomorrow the team will try to improve the situation and focus on preparing for the qualifications, which, like the first training, could also take place in the rain.

Charles Leclerc (9th): “Today we had a difficult time, but I would say that was to be expected. In terms of pace we were inferior to our rivals, but I think in reality we are still doing better than it seems based on today’s results.

We have to keep working to reach the level where we can fight for victories. Tomorrow I will do everything to get the best possible result in qualifying, but for now our gap is too big to count on special performances.

If we can recover two or three tenths we might be able to claim a good starting position, otherwise I predict we will have a difficult weekend.”

Carlos Sainz (19th): “Difficult day. In the morning we couldn’t work well on the track because of the bad weather and unfortunately during the second practice there was a problem with the gearbox during the first race. Because of all this I couldn’t do many laps.

“On Saturday we will try to make up for the time lost today to gain the confidence needed to ride on this circuit. You will have to work hard to close the gap with the group leaders.”
