McLaren team boss Andrea Stella explained the issue of using team tactics in the remaining races at Zandvoort…
Andrea Stella: “I don’t think the approach is correct if the riders are divided into first and second in advance. We have a different principle. We prefer a fair and just approach and then evaluate the results.
Ten races to go. For Lando to compete for the championship, he has to perform at a very high level. He has to be faster and then he earns his status on the track. If a driver is successful because of his speed and competitiveness, then we will evaluate, based on fairness and honesty, whether the team has to make a certain choice in some cases, for example: “Oscar, can you do this to support Lando in the fight?” for the World Championship? But this should always be a conversation before the race.
This decision should not be a surprise. We all have to agree with him in advance, because we are one team and victory is our common goal. There is not one person who goes his own way, and the rest must follow him.
This is our approach. We make a decision together, formulate it clearly and start from that for each specific case.”
