Williams team boss James Vowles gave his first comments to Sky Sports following Logan Sargent’s accident during practice at Zandvoort on Saturday.
Q: Maybe the accident happened at the most inconvenient time of the weekend…
James Vowles: Yes, although there may not be a “right” moment for that. But it all happened at the worst possible moment, when we had just installed a number of new components on the machine, the development of which had cost hundreds and hundreds of hours of team time. And now it has all hit the fence of the highway.
But the real difficulty is that this is the third practice session, qualifying is very soon and the car is in such a bad state.
Q: Do you have a spare chassis? And are there enough spare parts, including the spare parts that you installed on the FW46 this weekend?
James Vowles: There is a spare chassis, but the number of spare parts is limited, and if something happens to another car, it must somehow be ensured that the required number of parts are available in the closed park. Now I want to understand whether we can maintain both cars in a closed park and repair them if necessary.
Q: Obviously the last thing you want is for problems to arise at Alex Albon’s Williams…
James Vowles: Absolutely right. That is why it is now necessary to first find out what kind of damage Logan’s car has sustained. It seems that it is quite bad and that the chassis may need to be replaced.
