Piastri has and never had a contract with Alpine F1

The scandalous story surrounding Oscar Piastri’s contract with Alpine will inevitably continue and further developments depend on the lawyers representing the interests of the parties.

However, according to RacingNews365, the promising Australian driver has never had a contract with the works Renault team under which he would be obliged to drive for them in Formula 1 and this is the gist of the situation. Therefore, nothing will stop Piastri from making his F1 debut at McLaren in 2023.

Recall the key events of this story: On July 30, it was announced that Fernando Alonso would be moving to Aston Martin next year, and shortly after, Alpine quickly announced that in 2023 their reserve driver Oscar Piastri would be Esteban Ocon’s new teammate.

But just hours after the Alpine press release, which incidentally did not include a quote from the rider himself, Oscar released a statement saying he would not be riding for Alpine.

It turns out that in November 2021 Piastri signed a contract not with Alpine F1 but with the Alpine Racing Academy, although it did say that the team should give him the opportunity to drive a certain number of kilometers in tests, his expenses and name him to reserve driver in 2022.

This document has therefore not been registered by the FIA Contract Recognition Board (CRB). That is why, when the McLaren team sent their contract with Piastri to the CRB, they revealed no signs of a conflict situation.

Although McLaren’s agreement with Daniel Ricciardo does not expire until the end of 2023, Woking plans to release him from obligations to the team. The details of the “divorce” are currently being discussed, but rumor has it that the Australian’s management is demanding monetary compensation of approximately $21 million.

Alpine apparently has no choice but to go to court in civil cases. At the same time, the Renault Group’s sports department is registered in France, while the Alpine F1 team is based in the UK, so it’s not yet clear where exactly the matter can be considered.

If events unfold according to this scenario, the Alpine F1 team can only claim financial compensation in connection with Piastri’s departure, as there are simply no legal ways to influence him and force him to join the factory Renault team in 2023. to play.
