Hamilton: The car is not as good as in Spa

Mercedes drivers are not happy with the results shown in Zandvoort, but the reasons for their dissatisfaction are different.

Lewis Hamilton (8th): “Today I am much happier with the car because I was moving forward and making progress, so we were going in the right direction, but unfortunately we started from too far away.

If I had been somewhere where my partner was based on the qualifying results (George Russell started from 4th), I think I would have finished at least in the top five. I think we could have come very close to the podium. I don’t know if we were faster than Ferrari or not, but there were some signs that we were very fast.

Even though the car wasn’t as good as in the previous phase of the season, because our pace in Spa was much higher. Anyway, today we were more or less on the same level as everyone else.”

George Russel (7th): “To be honest I don’t know what happened. On all three compounds we weren’t fast enough and we rolled back.

It is strange that in qualifying we showed the 4th fastest time and yesterday we were only behind three cars whose drivers started before us but were clearly faster than Ferrari, and today this lead was lost.

I just felt like the car didn’t have enough grip and it literally felt like I was driving on ice. We clearly did something wrong, so I’m a bit perplexed now.
