During the race in Zandvoort it was not the first time that Kevin Magnussen helped his teammate this season by keeping his rivals at bay.
After starting from the pit lane, the Dane spent a long first stint on Hard and by the halfway point of the race was running tenth, behind Hulkenberg. Unlike his partner, he still had a pit stop waiting for him.
When Albon caught up with him, Magnussen actively held him back for a couple of laps. As a result, Alex was overtaken by Gasly, Alonso and Stroll – they drove in a tight group until they were ahead of the Haas driver at almost the same time and he turned into the pits.
Kevin’s attempts to help Hulkenberg were in vain, with Gasly and Alonso pushing the German back to eleventh place and out of the points race, and Albon, similarly held back by Magnussen in Jeddah, expressing his discontent.
Alex Albon: “Kevin is an incredible team player, I give him a lot of credit. The FIA doesn’t have a good control on this issue; there is a certain ‘grey area’ regarding the actions of drivers when overtaking a group of cars.
There are some really fast corners – seven, eight, the last one, where Kevin braked at the top and I had to avoid him. It seems to me that this is already out of bounds.
I had the same situation in Monaco with Yuki during the race and I complained. But the FIA thought everything was fine. The problem is that at some point there will be an accident.”
