Williams youth academy member Franco Colapinto will replace Logan Sargent in the Williams line-up at Monza until the end of the season. He will drive under the number #43.
The 21-year-old driver becomes the 49th driver for Williams Racing, the first Argentine in Formula 1 in 23 years and the second Argentine to drive for Williams, after Carlos Reutemann.
Franco Colapinto: “It is a great honour for me to make my Formula 1 debut with Williams – something I could only dream of. The team has a great history and a challenging mission to return to the forefront – I am looking forward to taking part.
“Coming into Formula 1 halfway through the season will be a huge challenge, but I am ready for the challenge and am fully focused on working hard with Alex and the team to achieve success.”
James VowlesTeam Principal: “The decision to replace a driver mid-season is very difficult, but we believe this is the best opportunity for Williams to fight for points in the remaining races.
We’ve just made a significant upgrade to the car and need to take every opportunity to score points in a surprisingly close battle in the midfield.
We believe in the participants of our youth program, Franco was given a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate his speed and skill.
Of course this is incredibly difficult for Logan, who gave his all during his time at Williams. We want to thank him for his work and positive attitude. We will support him in the future.
“I know Franco has great speed and potential and we look forward to seeing what he can achieve in Formula 1.”
