A year ago at Monza, Alex Albon was able to set the sixth fastest time in qualifying and finished seventh in the race, but he doubts whether the Williams car will now allow him to repeat those results.
Alex Albon: “I don’t think we have the same car in terms of speed as last year. A week ago at Zandvoort the FW46 was second fastest on the straights and we have to remember what it can do in reality.
But I think everything will be fine, and we will be able to fight for the points, although probably at the very end of the top ten, and not for sixth place. In any case, we will do our best, because I think we have a reasonably fast car now.”
Naturally, Albon had to answer questions about changes in the team and new teammate Franco Colapinto.
“Logan Sargent is a great guy, but it didn’t work out for him in Formula 1,” said Alex. “But I’m sure whatever he does in the future, he’ll be fine. I know the pace he can show.
Of course, Franco is coming to the team now and he still has a lot to learn, but I think he will make his Formula 1 debut at the right time. If I could choose which circuit to have my first race at, I would choose Monza, because it forgives some mistakes, and in this respect it is better than Baku or Singapore.
The decision to replace Logan was made at the very last moment, and I heard about it shortly before the official announcement. Of course, we had a conversation with him, but the content of it remains between us. He and I got along well, and of course I worry about him. But at this point I propose to close the subject.
If we talk about Franco, he knows that next year there will be no place in the team, so now he should not feel much pressure in the sense that he does not have to show good results, because he is not fighting for a place in the team. Formula 1. We can say that he will just gain experience.
I don’t know what he will do in 2025, but everything he learns now will be very useful to him, even if he spends another season in Formula 2. Since he has already driven our car, I don’t think he is expected to face any particular difficulties. If only in terms of physical activity, when we go to Singapore and Qatar. It’s not that there are surprises waiting for him there, but it’s difficult to adapt to such loads.
However, Williams knows how to organise the process of developing drivers well, so that they can show the best possible results. I think I will try to help him as much as possible.”
