On Tuesday, Williams announced the signing of Franco Colapinto, who will replace Logan Sargent until the end of the season. Speaking to the press ahead of the start of the weekend in Monza, the Argentine driver said he was only informed of the team’s decision on Monday.
Franco Colapinto: “On Monday I was working in the simulator at MP Motorsport, preparing with the team for the Formula 2 round in Monza. As you can imagine, everything was done at the last minute. I don’t know when the team started thinking about me, but I was always ready for such an opportunity and I waited for it for a long time.
“Since my childhood I dreamed of competing in Formula 1, and today I have this opportunity. I am very happy and grateful to Williams for this opportunity. Yes, the decision was made at the last minute, but I was always ready.”
Franco Colapinto added that he was able to talk to Logan Sargent: “It was very difficult. I think it’s difficult for everyone – both for the team and for the drivers, who replace each other during the season. Of course Logan feels uncomfortable. He had a great opportunity to come into Formula 1 and had some very good performances. I think he found speed very quickly in Formula 1.
“I’ve been working towards getting into Formula 1 since I was a kid. You never know when the opportunity will come, so I’m taking it. I really feel sorry for Logan because he’s done a great job. I hope he’ll be successful in whatever he does in the future. He’s a really good racer.”
